Born in the lockdowns of 2020, Poet Street is a jazz ensemble, composed entirely of young female artists of the Melbourne / Naarm jazz scene. The drive behind the formation of this group was the common desire to play live music, and to play with other people in a time when everything was online and no one dared leave the safety of their living room. Wanting to stand up to the gender imbalance in the Melbourne music scene, Poet Street performed live for the first time at the 2020 Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival, where they were honoured to receive a recording prize with Rolling Stock Recording Rooms. Which brings us to the album, “Poet St.”. This recording was two years in the making, due to ongoing lockdowns, and inspired each band member to write and arrange their own music which has led to significant development in their skills as players, musicians and writers. Now with majority of the band in their final year of tertiary education, they are presenting to you their hard work, passion; their debut album, featuring a collection of some of the first originals and arrangements that were written for the band.
